Comments: The name Westkott has a very old tradition in Germany, the origin in Germany is placed in the Bergische Land, in a place, where now the town of Wuppertal is found. History of the name is followed back to appr.the year 800 AD. There used to be an area called Westkotten, meaning a Farm area where members of the family lived. It used to be a so-called Freigut, which means that taxes had to be payed to the German Emperor, but not to the local governing earls in those old days. The name seems to have been of saxon origin, meaning the Kotten (Farmhouse) in the very West of lower-saxon settling-room. Names of that kind are quite common in this part of Germany. The Westkotts were farmers, craftsmen esp. dyers, bleachers and weavers, not nobles. Today the town of Wuppertal is the place where a lot of Families with the name Westkott or (after a writing-mistake made in a church-register) Weskott still live. More Families are found in our country in the land of Nordrhein-Westfalen.In the east and in the South this name is very rarely found. A moving to GB and USA is reported. Small family meetings are held by parts of the clan. That is a short greeting from Martin Weskott in Germany! My adress: Elisenstr.17, D 50667 Köln, Germany My profession: MD, Consultant in occupational health and allergology at the University of Cologne

Comments: I found it interesting in reading the excerpt from your sister's book that your family's genealogy research began with a trip to Gorham (Maine?), since Gorham is my last name and my current genealogical goal is to find out whether my family is or is not connected to the Gorhams for whom those towns back east were named. Thus far I have reached 1858 in Missouri, which leaves a difficult haul back to the 1600's and Desire Howland's marriage to John Gorham...

Comments: a long time ago-say 30 years- I traced family from voyage to Canada during potato famine to Protestant clergy using surname Friel. Now 14 yr old is seeking info to show off for family reunion within her peer group. All I have is a small dish purchased in Ireland in 1969 using surname Friel. And a million stories, none accurate I am sure, of family history. We could use a bit of help in searching.
